Introducing Discourse Labs

October 16, 2024

I’m excited to share that after spending the past several years in “startup mode” as part of the National Science Foundation’s Convergence Accelerator, the ARTT team is in the process of “graduating” as a Hacks/Hackers-led project and will soon launch a new independent entity, Discourse Labs!

Discourse Labs, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is an applied research group focused on developing tools and resources for productive public dialogue, such as the ARTT project, guidelines for the ethical use of AI in public communications, and a pilot curriculum for local election officials.

We provide research-backed tools and resources for productive public dialogue

The support from Hacks/Hackers since our team was first invited to participate in the Convergence Accelerator in 2021 has been crucial to the ARTT project's success so far. By launching Discourse Labs, we’ll be able to continue to explore collaborations aimed at empowering people to become more informed, better able to engage in positive exchanges, and more connected with others.

Here’s a basic explainer of Discourse Labs:

What we do:

Discourse Labs provides research-backed tools and resources for productive public dialogue. We believe people should have the tools, technology, and skills to engage in productive public dialogue using credible information.

What will Discourse Labs be working on, and what will our future look like?

We will continue our work on the ARTT project, ARTT-LEO curriculum, and the development of AI guidelines in the Ethical Use of AI in Public Health Communications Working Group. We’ll also continue our mission empowering people to engage in productive public dialogue.

Who does Discourse Labs work with?

We will also continue to collaborate with the organizations involved with our current projects and activities. For example, Hacks/Hackers and the University of Washington’s Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science are key partners of our ARTT-related work, which has received funding and support from the National Science Foundation and the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Who is Discourse Labs?

Most of us have played a role on the ARTT project, so far! You can meet the Discourse Labs team here.

What’s next?

We are always seeking new collaborators, so please reach out! We would love to discuss areas where we could work together.
